Deep-dive: AquaTru vs Berkey — Full Head-to-Head Comparison

Why Water Filtration Matters in the Mediterranean

If you have recently moved to Southern Europe, you have probably noticed that the water tastes and feels different from what you are used to. While technically safe to drink in most cities, Mediterranean tap water presents a unique set of challenges that make filtration a worthwhile investment.

  • Water quality varies dramatically by region. A flat in Lisbon, a villa in Crete, and an apartment in Barcelona can have vastly different water profiles, even within the same country.
  • Hard water (limestone) is the norm on the coast. The Mediterranean basin sits on limestone geology. Calcium and magnesium levels are significantly higher than Northern Europe, causing limescale in kettles, appliances, and pipes.
  • Aging infrastructure in historic areas. Charming old-town apartments often come with pre-1990 plumbing. Lead and copper can leach from corroded pipes, especially after water sits overnight.
  • PFAS is an emerging EU-wide concern. The EU PFAS regulation (2025) set new limits on these persistent chemicals. Areas near industrial zones, airports, and agricultural land are most at risk.

EU Drinking Water Directive (2020/2184)

The EU revised its Drinking Water Directive in 2020, tightening limits on lead, PFAS, microplastics, and endocrine disruptors. All member states must comply by January 2026. While this raises the baseline standard, actual water quality at your tap depends on local infrastructure and building plumbing, which the directive does not control. A point-of-use filter provides the last line of defense between the municipal supply and your glass.

Chlorine Taste Is Not a Safety Issue

The chlorine taste common across Southern Europe means the water is being actively disinfected, which is a good sign. However, many people find the taste unpleasant, especially if coming from countries with lower chlorination levels like the UK or Scandinavia. Even an inexpensive pitcher filter removes chlorine taste effectively, making tap water taste comparable to bottled water.

How We Review Water Filters

Water quality is the primary metric. Every product is evaluated on cleanliness, pH, and mineral content — based on manufacturer specs, NSF/ANSI certifications, and independent lab data. Secondary factors like price and installation still matter, but they don't drive the headline score.
