Municipal water systems across Europe are well-regulated — but regulation means "within legal limits," not "no detectable trace of concern." PFAS are now detected in water supplies across all EU countries. Lead leaches from pre-1980s building pipes after water leaves the treatment plant. Chloramines (used increasingly over chlorine) are harder to remove than chlorine alone. A good filter addresses all of these.
The EU Drinking Water Directive sets limits for 48 chemical and biological parameters. But it was last comprehensively updated in 2020, and PFAS thresholds (now set at 0.1 µg/L) are very recent. Older limits for lead (now 10 µg/L) still allow measurable amounts from building pipes. "Legal" and "zero risk" are not the same thing, especially for pregnant women, infants, and people with compromised immune systems.
Standard activated carbon handles chlorine easily. Chloramines — used by some European utilities as a more stable disinfectant — require catalytic activated carbon or extended contact time. Most multi-stage countertop filters and RO units handle both. If your city uses chloramines (check your annual water report), prioritize filters specifically rated for chloramine removal.
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are synthetic compounds that don't break down in the environment or the human body. They've been found in tap water across Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and increasingly across southern Europe near industrial or agricultural zones. Reverse osmosis (like AquaTru) removes PFAS at 95%+. Certain specialty activated carbon blocks (like Clearly Filtered) are also PFAS-certified. Standard Brita-type pitchers do not remove PFAS.
Lead was used in plumbing solder and service pipes throughout Europe until the 1980s. If your building pre-dates 1980 and you're in Lisbon, Oporto, Madrid, Athens, or any older European city, lead risk from internal building pipes is real. Only NSF/ANSI 58 (RO) or NSF/ANSI 53 (activated carbon with lead certification) will give you reliable protection. Check the certification, not just the marketing.
