What to Look For in a Renters & No-Install Filter

Renters have one constraint that homeowners don't: you can't put a hole in anything. That rules out under-sink systems and whole-house filters — but it leaves three excellent options: pitcher filters, countertop gravity filters, and countertop reverse osmosis units.

Pitcher Filters: Low cost, high convenience

Pitcher filters like ZeroWater and Brita sit in your fridge and filter water slowly through an activated carbon or ion-exchange stage. They're cheap to buy, easy to use, and work well for chlorine and basic taste improvement. The trade-off: small capacity, slow flow, and frequent cartridge changes — especially in hard water regions like Spain and Cyprus where filters get exhausted faster. ZeroWater's 5-stage ion exchange removes virtually all dissolved solids (reads 000 TDS), making it the best pitcher option for heavy-duty filtration. Brita is better for chlorine taste and cost-per-litre.

Countertop Gravity Filters: Best for off-grid and bacteria removal

Gravity filters like Berkey and British Berkefeld work without electricity or plumbing — just fill the upper chamber and let gravity do the work. They remove bacteria, viruses, heavy metals, and organic compounds. Filter elements last 2–3 years, making the per-litre cost extremely low. The Berkey is the go-to for renters who want serious filtration without installation. Note: gravity filters don't reduce TDS or hardness, so if you're in a very hard water area, you'll still see mineral deposits.

Countertop RO: Best overall performance for apartments

The AquaTru Classic is the best no-install RO option available. It plugs into a power outlet, connects to nothing, and produces reverse osmosis water from a countertop. It removes 82+ contaminants including PFAS, lead, chloramines, fluoride, and hardness. Higher upfront cost than pitchers, but the filtration quality is the same as under-sink RO without any installation. If budget allows, it's the strongest all-round choice for apartment renters.

What to ask before buying

  • What's my main concern? Taste and chlorine → Brita or Berkey. PFAS and lead → AquaTru or ZeroWater. Bacteria risk → Berkey or LifeStraw.
  • How much water do I use daily? Pitchers suit 1–2 people. Gravity and countertop RO suit 2–4 people.
  • How hard is my water? Hard water (Spain, Cyprus, southern France) exhausts pitcher cartridges faster. RO handles it best.
  • Do I have counter space? Pitchers go in the fridge. Gravity filters and countertop RO need dedicated counter space (30–40cm footprint).
