What to Look For in a Travel & Outdoors Filter

The most important question in travel water filtration: what are you protecting against? In Western Europe, Canada, and Australia, tap water is treated and biologically safe — the concerns are taste, chlorine, and occasional chemical contamination. In Southeast Asia, Africa, and most of the developing world, tap water may carry viral contamination that standard membrane filters cannot remove.

The virus problem most hikers don't know about

Most hiking and camping filters — including the Sawyer Squeeze and LifeStraw Peak — use hollow fibre membranes that physically block bacteria and protozoa but cannot stop viruses. Viruses are 100x smaller than bacteria and pass straight through 0.2-micron membranes. In wilderness North America and Europe, viral contamination in backcountry water is extremely rare — membrane filters are sufficient. But for international travel in developing countries, choose a purifier that explicitly certifies virus removal: the GRAYL GeoPress, SteriPen Ultra, or Epic Nano Bottle.

Choosing by use case

  • Backpacking in Europe / North America: Sawyer Squeeze or LifeStraw Peak. Lightweight, durable, excellent filter life, bacteria/protozoa protection is what you need.
  • International travel in developing world: GRAYL GeoPress or Epic Nano. Virus removal is non-negotiable. The GeoPress handles everything in one press-action.
  • Everyday city travel in Europe: LifeStraw Go or Epic Nano for a filtered travel bottle that improves tap water quality wherever you are.
  • Ultralight expeditions: SteriPen Ultra for UV purification (lightest virus-capable solution) combined with a pre-filter for turbid water.

Chemical contamination in the outdoors

Backcountry water near farmland, mining operations, or industrial zones may contain agricultural chemicals, nitrates, or PFAS that hollow fibre membranes cannot address. Standard hiking filters were not designed for this. If your route passes through potentially contaminated areas, use the GRAYL GeoPress (which includes activated carbon for chemical removal) rather than a membrane-only filter.
