What to Look For in a Whole House Filter
A whole house water filter treats every litre of water entering your home at the main supply line — meaning every tap, shower, washing machine, and dishwasher receives filtered water. This is fundamentally different from point-of-use systems (under-sink RO, countertop filters) which only treat water at a specific outlet.
What are you treating?
For homes on municipal water, the primary concerns are chlorine, chloramines (harder to remove than chlorine alone), VOCs, and sediment. A catalytic carbon whole house filter handles these comprehensively. For homes in hard water regions — including most of Southern Europe — a dedicated water softener or at minimum a salt-free conditioner should also be installed. Carbon filtration alone does not remove hardness.
Well water requires a different approach
Well water may contain iron, manganese, hydrogen sulfide, and bacteria that municipal water simply does not. The iSpring WGB32BM targets iron and manganese specifically. Well water almost always also needs a UV stage — since groundwater can carry bacteria even when it appears clear. A VIQUA D4 UV system added after your carbon filter gives complete biological protection.
Flow rate matters more than buyers expect
A whole house system that restricts flow to 10 L/min will cause weak showers and slow-filling appliances. Look for systems rated at 20–30 L/min minimum. The SpringWell CF4's ActivFlo design specifically addresses pressure drop — maintaining flow even during peak household demand.
5-year total cost of ownership
Budget for the total 5-year cost, not just the purchase price. A cheap 3-filter system requiring 6-monthly cartridge replacements at €60 per set may cost more than a premium carbon system with a million-litre media rating. Calculate cost-per-litre and factor in professional installation if you are not plumbing-competent.
