Hard Water in Portugal, Spain & Greece: The Silent Filter Killer

What Is Hard Water, Actually?

Here’s the real picture for the three key markets:
Portugal — Lisbon

Limescale is the white, chalky deposit left when hard water evaporates. It builds up inside:

The effect on skin and hair is more immediate. When hard water meets soap, it forms a sticky calcium soap residue that stays on your skin and hair after rinsing. This:

Why Standard Water Filters Don’t Solve This

You buy a good-quality activated carbon filter — something like a Brita jug or an inline carbon block. It removes the chlorine. The water tastes better. You think the problem is solved.
But hardness is a mineral issue, not a chemical issue. Carbon filters don’t remove calcium and magnesium. They weren’t designed to.
What activated carbon filters do:

Water Softener — Most Effective but Requires Installation

- Salt/regeneration tablets (ongoing cost)
- Not suitable for renters or short-term expats
In Spain, the high proportion of hard water means salt-based softeners are common in newer homes and apartments with central systems.
Scale Inhibitor (Electronic Descaler) — Partial Solution
Electronic or magnetic water descalers don’t remove minerals — they change the crystal structure of calcium so it doesn’t form hard scale. They reduce scale buildup but don’t soften water or improve taste. Cost: €80–200.
